Wine? No Ma’am!

I went to mass today. Are you surprised? You shouldn’t be. It’s a Sunday and you should have gone, too. If not, *tsk, tsk*. I’ll get Sr. Peter to pull out her ruler.

Back to the story. I went to mass. It was your usual parish mass. Boring homily and all. It wasn’t my pastor’s fault. It was only boring because I was super tired from staying up late last night. Oh, I better watch out. If I keep doing that Sr. Peter is going to come after ME.

So it comes time for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. All that good stuff happens. It’s Communion time. I stand up from my end of the second row seat, receive my dearly beloved Jesus, I get back in my pew and pray. From my amazing seat I could see the Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion who was handling the Precious Blood. I heard a little girl talking rather loudly. I opened my peeked from behind my folded hands to see a little girl with her mother. Mother dearest was having a hard time getting a hold of the chalice because she was holding a hyper, little girl’s hand. She was tuggin’ away.

“MOMMY, MOMMY, MOMMY!”

“Yes, sweetie?”

“What’s in that cup?”

Silence…

“What’s in that cup????”

….

“WHAT’S IN THAT CUP???”

“SWEETIE, that’s wine.”

“Oh. Ok!”

The Extraordinary Minister lovingly grabbed the tiny girl’s shoulder, looked her straight in the eyes and said, “NO, this is the Precious Blood of Christ. This is JESUS.” Her face lit up. She immediately exclaimed, “MOMMY, CAN I HAVE SOME??”

Her mother had to pull her away because once she found out what that was–no, WHO that was–she had to have some.

Shouldn’t we have that same love for our Lord in the Eucharist?? We should long for Him like we long for food because He is our Heavenly Food. We should long for Him like we long for water because He gives us Living Waters.

That isn’t just wine, ma’am. That is JESUS!
